TOP 10 GADGETS OF 2024
The year 2024 has been a true breakthrough in the world of technology. From transparent screens to altered realities, this year's gadgets not only amaze but also open new horizons for users. They not only enhance everyday life but also change our perception of what the future of technology could look like.
We have gathered the most exciting innovations that became symbols of the year.
1. Terra by Modem Works and Panter & Tourron
This handheld "compass" allows people to take walks without the need to use phones for navigation. Instead, the AI-based device creates custom routes based on requests like "Kyoto architecture tour, return by 4:00 PM," and guides users along the correct path with haptic feedback.
"In a world where we're constantly distracted by smartphones, the need to reconnect with our environment is more urgent than ever," said Stefano Pantero, founder of Panter & Tourron.
This year, Apple entered the metaverse with its mixed-reality headset, Vision Pro, its first major new product in over a decade.
The device resembles traditional VR glasses but has the ability to switch to augmented reality, with apps appearing over the real world. The operating system, which allows control through eye, head, and hand movements, quickly won the top prize at the D&AD awards, despite some user complaints about discomfort.
3. EP-1320 by Teenage Engineering
Lutes, bagpipes, and "noisy villagers" are just some of the sounds musicians can use in the EP-1320 beat machine from Swedish company Teenage Engineering.
Also known as the "instrumentalis electronicum," this device allows users to create their own medieval music, enhanced with games styled like ancient graphical elements.
Another new release from Teenage Engineering after the EP-1320 this year was Rabbit R1 — an AI companion introduced at CES in Las Vegas but received negative reviews upon market release.
4. ThinkBook with Transparent Display by Lenovo
2024 seems to have become the year of transparent screens, with Samsung and LG showcasing transparent TVs at CES, and Lenovo unveiling a laptop with a transparent display at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
This industry-first transparent laptop in the ThinkBook concept features a rear camera that allows the device to recognize and interact with objects behind it using AI and augmented reality.
5. Pyri by Richard Alexandre, Karina Gunadi, Blake Goodwyn, and Tanghao Yu
Winner of this year’s British James Dyson Award, Pyri is a forest fire detector made from wax and charcoal, which breaks down under heat.
As the wax melts, it releases a saline solution rich in electrolytes that activates the electronics inside the device, triggering radio notifications to warn local residents.
This low-tech, cost-effective solution is an example of organic electronics using carbon compounds instead of rare or expensive metals, making them potentially biodegradable and avoiding the need for mining.
6. AX Visio Binoculars by Marc Newson and Swarovski Optik
Product designer Marc Newson created a pair of AI binoculars for Swarovski Optik, capable of identifying around 9,000 species of birds and wildlife in real time.
AX Visio features an additional lens between the two regular lenses, working as an augmented reality display, overlaying species information onto the surrounding environment.
7. Mate XT — Ultimate Design by Huawei
Another first of the year — Chinese manufacturer Huawei introduced, as claimed by the company, the world’s first phone with three foldable screens, which unfolds into a 10.2-inch tablet.
The flexible OLED display has hinges that allow it to fold in two directions through a specially designed system with two guides working together, enabling the screen to rotate both inward and outward.
The device automatically switches between single, double, and triple screen modes when unfolded, with a laminated composite structure that ensures durability despite its thinness.
8. MO/GO Pants for Walking from Arc'teryx and Skip
Outdoor brand Arc'teryx and startup Skip collaborated to create walking pants for people with disabilities, offering additional support during walking.
The MO/GO pants operate with battery-powered motors in the knees, supporting leg muscles during ascents and the knee joint during descents.
9. Flexible Display by LG Display
South Korean tech company LG used materials "typically used in contact lenses" to create this flexible screen. Equipped with micro-LEDs, the display can expand by 50%, from 12 to 18 inches. It can also be rolled and bent into various shapes.
10. Clicks Creator Mechanical Keyboard by Clicks Technology
For a touch of nostalgia from the 2000s, American startup Clicks Technology released a mechanical keyboard for iPhones, transforming them into modern BlackBerrys.
With 36 keys, the QWERTY keyboard was designed for more convenient typing on the go, with the "satisfying feedback" of physical keys.
