Sisu: The Finnish Secret to Resilience and Creativity in Difficult Times

In a world filled with numerous challenges, people constantly seek sources of resilience and inspiration. The Finnish concept of sisu is a unique approach to life that combines perseverance, adaptability, and creativity. How can this mindset be applied in daily life to help us overcome difficulties? What is sisu, and why is the world paying attention to it?

What is sisu and why is the world paying attention to it?

In the 21st century, global interest in Scandinavian concepts that promote balanced living is growing. We’ve already heard of the Danish hygge—the art of creating coziness—and the Swedish lagom, a philosophy of moderation: “not too much, not too little.” However, Finland offers a different, deeper, and more enduring principle—sisu. Unlike hygge and lagom, which focus on comfort and balance, sisu emphasizes inner strength and perseverance.

The word “sisu” comes from the Finnish language and has no direct equivalent in other languages. It refers to inner strength, determination, and the resolve to overcome obstacles—even when it seems like all resources have been exhausted. It’s more than mere endurance—it’s the willingness to move forward despite difficulties and fear. If endurance is the ability to persist over time and willpower is the control over one’s actions, then sisu is a combination of both, enhanced by the courage to act even when the situation seems hopeless.

Emilia Lahti, PhD at Aalto University in Helsinki, studies the concept of sisu and its application in daily life. She describes it as follows: “Sisu provides the last push that gives us strength when we would otherwise hesitate to act.”

Many cultures have their own concepts of inner strength, but sisu is more than simply “being strong” or “never giving up.” Its uniqueness lies in its ability to go beyond an individual’s physical and psychological limits—a kind of “second wind” that kicks in when all other options seem depleted.

“Sisu is the word that explains Finland,” proclaimed The New York Times in January 1940. The spirit of sisu can be seen in all aspects of Finnish life, from national history to everyday habits:

1. Military resilience. One of the most well-known examples is the Winter War of 1939–1940 when small Finland fiercely resisted a much stronger adversary.

2. Marathon spirit. Many Finns engage in long-distance running or extreme sports, testing their endurance and mental fortitude.

3. Cold-water swimming. The tradition of plunging into icy water after a sauna is not just about physical hardening—it’s a way to train one’s sisu.

Today, sisu is no longer confined to Finnish culture—it has become a global concept. People worldwide are seeking ways not only to overcome challenges but to transform obstacles into opportunities, making sisu particularly relevant in today’s fast-changing world.

How to Cultivate Endurance and Adaptability

Sisu is the inner strength that helps us push beyond what seems possible. In the workplace, this quality can be a key to success if properly developed. Emilia Lahti outlines five ways to tap into sisu in professional life:

1. Create psychological safety. To develop sisu, it’s essential to work in an environment where people feel free to express their opinions and make mistakes without fear of punishment. When you know you won’t be penalized for failure, you become more confident in taking risks, experimenting, and fostering innovation. Building a culture of trust and support in the workplace enhances resilience and perseverance.

2. Act courageously despite difficulties. Developing sisu involves changing your mindset—from avoiding challenges to viewing them as opportunities for growth. Let obstacles become stimuli for development. Embrace the principle of a “growth mindset”: every setback is a lesson that makes you stronger and more resilient.

3. Recall moments of personal strength. Negative thinking often makes us dwell on failures. But looking back, everyone can recall times when they overcame significant challenges. Take time to remember and write down instances when you exceeded your own expectations. This serves as a powerful reminder of your ability to overcome difficulties in the future.

4. Seek support. Even the strongest individuals cannot always overcome everything alone. When facing challenges, don’t hesitate to ask for help. Support from colleagues or mentors can serve as a mirror, reflecting your strength and resilience.

5. Help others develop their sisu. True strength lies not only in personal achievements but also in the ability to support others. Show genuine compassion and encouragement to colleagues when they face challenges. Create an environment where people feel understood and valued. This strengthens both individuals and the team as a whole.

Developing sisu at work is a journey that begins with believing in your own abilities and supporting others. Integrating these practices into daily life can help cultivate a sisu mindset that positively impacts your career, sports, and personal life.

Can Sisu Become a Global Trend?

In today’s world, where rapid changes and uncertainty have become the norm, the concept of sisu can serve as an essential tool for many cultures. Endurance and inner strength are undoubtedly important qualities—but can having too much sisube harmful? Research suggests that while sisu is beneficial for overcoming challenges, it also has a downside.

Excessive persistence in pursuing a goal can lead to emotional burnout and a loss of critical thinking, as individuals may ignore signs that it’s time to stop. Overemphasizing sisu can also negatively affect relationships with others due to an obsessive focus on personal goals.

Studies have shown that individuals with excessive levels of sisu often experience high levels of stress, symptoms of depression, and an overall decline in well-being. In contrast, healthy sisu is associated with greater psychological resilience and positive personality traits such as openness to new experiences and conscientiousness.

Although the concept of sisu is deeply rooted in Finnish culture, its essence resonates with people worldwide. Many cultures have their own analogs of this inner strength. For example, the Japanese concept of ganbaru represents perseverance in difficult times, while the British are known for their “stiff upper lip”—a phrase symbolizing emotional control and resilience. Yet, sisu has captured global attention—perhaps partly because Nordic countries consistently rank at the top of global happiness and life satisfaction indices. Many people hope that adopting these Nordic ideas will make them happier and more independent. In reality, happiness is more closely linked to the development of education and social welfare systems.

The key takeaway is that we must learn to balance perseverance with flexibility so that sisu works for us rather than against us.

Examples of people applying sisu principles can be found worldwide—from entrepreneurs who persist after setbacks to athletes who push beyond physical and mental barriers.

Sisu is more than just a Finnish personality trait. It is a way of life that empowers individuals to push their limits, overcome challenges, and discover new paths to success.
