Amazon is preparing to test humanoid robots for parcel delivery

Amazon Set to Test Humanoid Robots for Package Delivery: A New Phase in Logistics Automation

Amazon is preparing to test a new generation of delivery robots — humanoid machines designed to work alongside people in complex environments. The company is currently building a specialized training facility, Humanoid Park, in San Francisco, where these robots will learn to navigate obstacles, handle packages, and perform logistics-related tasks in real-world scenarios.

Rather than building the robots itself, Amazon is focusing on developing advanced software to control third-party hardware. This modular approach allows the company to stay agile and quickly adopt new breakthroughs in AI and robotics.

Why It Matters

The move is part of Amazon’s broader strategy to automate its logistics operations. The company is actively developing AI-powered agents that can take on multiple warehouse tasks — from unloading trailers to locating parts for equipment repairs. This kind of automation could drastically increase efficiency during peak seasons, such as the holidays.

Still, there are challenges. According to Professor Subramanian Ramamoorthy from the University of Edinburgh, humanoid robots might struggle in unpredictable settings that include pets, children, or cluttered homes. Real-world conditions can reduce their reliability and performance.

What’s Next

Amazon already has more than 20,000 Rivian electric delivery vans operating across the U.S. and is expected to expand real-world testing of humanoid robots soon. It’s another step toward a future where autonomous systems are integrated into everyday logistics.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently predicted that humanoid robots could soon become a common sight on city streets. With Amazon's latest initiative, that future may be arriving sooner than we think.
